London Mayor Boris Johnson wants the capital’s public spaces to be made more attractive for visitors and Londoners alike. Announcing a new initiative in Cannes, the Mayor’s Great Spaces panel will decide on projects submitted by London Boroughs to improve London’s ‘hidden treasures’ with up to £200,000 set aside this year to enable feasibility and design work to be undertaken by projects who want to take advantage of the fund.

No doubt the timing of this initiative may have something to do with the Oympics in 2012, but nonetheless, anything that can be done to improve the quality of life for Londoners is to be welcomed.

What kind projects manage to be approved by the Mayor’s Great Spaces panel, which is chaired by deputy Mayor for Planning and Policy Sir Simon Milton, is yet to be decided, and details of the initiative will be announcced during the spring, however the following criteria has been indicated. Spaces should be

  • Flexible in use, providing the potential for a variety of activities
  • Safe, catering to all users
  • Usable at most times of the day, night and year
  • Sustainable and durable
  • Beautifully designed and rich in texture
