Diane Abbott has become the first female to run for leader of the Labour Party in the upcoming leadership election. Ms Abbott MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington is running (surprisingly) on a platform talking about the sensitive issue of immigration.Ms Abbott also said

“The labour movement has changed, the majority of members of our big industrial unions are women, we need to talk directly towards women and women workers.”

So, Diane seeks to garner the support of women in this election that now boasts 6 candidates, five of which are male. She may be right in doing what she is doing, but will she get the require 33 supporters needed to enter the ballot later in the Autumn?

Notoriously to the left of the party, Ms Abbott came to parliament and was one of the prominent non-white MP’s along with Paul Boateng, Keith Vaz and Bernie Grant (now deceased). Will the post TB & GB new Labour party accept Dianes leftist views and think it’s a step in the right direction. will they want to side with a candidate who wants to bring the thorny issue of immigration back to the forefront of party politics and will they want a woman leading the party?

If she wins the required support and enters the leadership race proper, it could well make the race a bit more interesting to watch…
