Gordon Brown Resigns0

Gordon Brown has resigned as British Prime Minister in a statement just made in front of 10 Downing Street. In a short and dignified statement, the Prime minister said he would tender his resignation to the Queen and recommend that she invite the leader of the opposition to form the next government.
Gordon Brown also said he would resign as leader of the Labour party with immediate effect, triggering a leadership election.
In a statement to waiting journalists in Downing street, the PM did not wait for negotiations to complete between the Conservative party and the Liberal Democrats.
Following his announcement in which he thanked his staff, his wife Sarah Brown and their two sons for their support during his premiership. He also paid tribute to the British Armed Forces who are fighting in Afghanistan.
What became apparent during the 15 minutes following the PM’s announcement, pundits seemed to be suggesting that we didn’t have a government as convention was not followed in that the incoming PM was not in place to receive the invitation of the Queen.
In effect what does that mean for the LIbDemCon pact? In theory David Cameron could go ahead and form a minority government, but he does not seem to want to do this and risk having his policies voted down. It seems like he wants to tie the LIbDems support and thus form “a strong and stable government” ahead of the Queens speech.
