Dave, Nick and Gordon are set to go head to head in the first ever TV debate between priministerial candidates to be aired tonight on ITV1 at 8.30pm.
I wonder how good a debate it will be after months of wrangling discussions about the rules. The format includes them starting out with a 1 minute opening statement, some questions from invited guests and emailed-in questions then a closing 90 second statement from each. This is the first of three debates and I believe tonight they will concentrate on domestic policies.
Since most of us are only interested in domestic stuff anyway, this will probably be the most important debate of the three. Hopefully some of our JunkGov readers will see it and will post their comments on how they think it went tomorrow.
The debate is not a live one I don’t believe so there must be some editing and we perhaps won’t see any of the stuff that happened with the Obama/McLain town hall debates, where people come up and call candidates terrorists (owww!)

“He Said, She Said” So… I watched the first ever election debate, a bit of a big move for me as I am generally ambivalent in terms of my interest in and engagement with politics. However I thought the occasion warranted making more of an effort to engage with the subject matter. Is it my lack of regular engagement with politics that makes me feel it seemed only a touch more than an hour and a half of “he said-she said”? Peppered with some emotive anecdotes, some tactical volleying, and (excuse me if I am being cynical) some timely questions from individuals who together made up an acceptable representative mix of society – how do you think the audience was picked? I was hoping that on watching I would feel inspired to takes this all more seriously, that I would hear something that struck a chord with me, brought some clarity to the issues… Still waiting, guess I will have to engage more?
